How Can You Wave Back To Someone At Any Moment On Facebook Messenger

How Do You Delete A Wave On Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger received a wave button a few years ago. Using the wave feature, one may virtually wave to someone who has been added to their Facebook Messenger friend list. When you first meet a new acquaintance or contact, a waving hand gesture seems to be a substitute for saying “Hi” or “Hello.” Though some people find waving weird, it is the most effective way to grab someone's attention at the same time.

What's odd is that you can't just wave to someone on Messenger anytime you want. That's because there's no way to send a wave via Messenger when you're in the middle of a chat. The wave option shows just when you connect with someone on Messenger for the first time or when you begin a discussion with someone for the first time.

If you wish to wave on Messenger during an open chat, you may be unable to do so. Fortunately, there is a simple workaround that allows you to wave back to anybody at any moment.

Facebook Messenger lacks a wave button.

UPDATE (March 15, 2020) — The new Messenger, which has a considerably simpler look, has been available for a few weeks now. Messenger's “Discover” tab has been removed as part of the major UI overhaul on both the iOS and Android platforms.

Furthermore, Facebook seems to have disabled the wave function from Messenger. In the Active tab, you will no longer see the wave button or the waving hand symbol next to the list of active contacts. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to prevent this change. We're not sure why Facebook got rid of this function.

How to Make a Messenger Wave

The following method is useful when someone waves at you but Messenger does not provide the option to wave back.

  1. Launch the Messenger app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
  2. From the bottom bar, choose the “People” tab.
  3. To view a list of active contacts, go to the “Active” tab.
  4. A grey hand will now appear to the right of the individuals who are online.
  5. To say hello, tap the grey hand symbol. When you wave at someone, the grey wave symbol becomes yellow.
  6. You will now wave your hand toward the receiver.

Please keep in mind that the individual in your Messenger contacts list must be active for this to function.

How to Wave Back on the Messenger App

If you wish to wave back to someone who first waved to you on Messenger, follow the instructions below.

  1. Open the message in the Messenger app.
  2. A yellow hand will emerge, indicating that “XYZ is waving at you” and that you should “tap to wave back.”
  3. To wave back, tap the yellow waving hand symbol.
  4. You'll now get a notification that says, “You and XYZ (the other person) waved at each other.”

Sending a Facebook.com Wave

When you're using Facebook's browser interface on a PC, waving is a lot more easy. This is due to the fact that you may send a wave via Facebook.com even if your pals are not online or active.

To do so, go to facebook.com and go to the “Contacts” area on the bottom right side of the screen. You'll find a few random connections listed here, both online and offline. Simply hover the mouse over the chosen contact and click the grey hand symbol to wave. The wave symbol will become yellow, and Facebook will inform you in a pop-up tab that “You waved to XYZ!”

The only drawback is that you can't look for a specific buddy and wave to him or her.

How to Undo a Messenger Wave

If you accidentally waved at someone and want to reverse the action, you may do so. Open the chat and long-tap on the wave symbol to do so. Now, hit Remove and choose “Remove for Everyone.”

This will undo the wave and erase it from both the recipient's and your chat window.

One Last Thought

It is important to note that you must reverse the wave action within 10 minutes or you will be unable to delete the delivered message.
